The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act was passed in 2016 to bring greater transparency and regulation in real estate. The Act made it mandatory for state governments to set up their respective Real Estate Regulatory Authorities (RERAs).

The Act was notified in Uttar Pradesh in October, 2016, and the administrative body was set up in June, 2017. To date, more than 3000 projects and 44000 complaints have been registered with the body.
